While our world continues to face the uncertainties of COVID-19, we are finding hope and inspiration from the young women in our program.
Earlier this month, we wrote to you about the COVID-19 crisis that is affecting our organization, alongside the rest of the world. We are filled with gratitude for the outpouring of support we've received. Thank you to all who have donated and walked alongside a young woman in the midst of this global crisis.
There’s been one thing on everyone’s mind - safety through this aggressive pandemic. Before the office closed, we spent time with each woman to talk about Coronavirus: to separate the facts from the fiction, focus on the precautions, and look at how to make a few changes in habit and environment to optimize good health.
We’re so proud of the effort of two young women who completed their first take at higher secondary exams. While a few women finished their exams just before things were shutdown in Mumbai, several women's exams were postponed as a result of the pandemic. Regardless, spirits remain high as they continue to study from home.
"I'm preparing for my 3rd year exams and this, along with talking to my friends gives, me hope and keeps me motivated!"
- Jaya*, Mumbai Sanctuary
"My spark of hope is to hold on to faith, so I can keep going and see the results tomorrow" - Camila*, Tijuana Sanctuary
Social isolation may keep us apart, however dance is bringing the young women in Tijuana together. Last month, a local dance teacher began giving lessons to the young women in the Sanctuary. Not willing to let COVID-19 stand in the way of this fun and therapeutic activity, she made a dance tutorial video and sent it to each woman so they could practice at home.
In Kampala, one survivor, Leila*, is finding strength and hope in her children. Leila said, "My kids give me hope to live and always remind me that we are family no matter what." She is proud of her daughter, who has been keeping a close eye on the news to keep their family up to date on the CoronaVirus.
Next week, we are joining #GivingTuesdayNow, a global day of unity to take place on May 5, as a response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19. Join the campaign by creating your own personal fundraiser!
We have ignited a Spark of Hope through our Social Enterprise, PURPOSE Jewelry. Over 400 people have joined our movement and sent a piece of jewelry to a loved one or friend. 100% of proceeds go to our program! Join the movement!
